Hartley Botanica — Where Every Wedding Becomes Part of the Story

by Barbara (Hartley) Goodrich

Hartley Botanica began not as a business, but as a promise.

In 1997, when I got engaged, my parents each wanted to contribute in the way they knew best. My mother, who had spent our childhood creating epic Halloween costumes, and endless matching outfits for my sister and I, began designing my wedding dress. My father, a lifelong landscape artist, and not to be outdone, decided he would make the venue! He had been designing award-winning landscape displays each year for the Ventura County Fair, and he landscaped the homes of celebrities all through the 80s and 90s – how hard could it be? Mom laid it out for the flow of traffic, and Dad got to work building waterfalls.

They cleared an acre of nursery land and began planting with no blueprint beyond love and intention. Stone by stone, path by path, the gardens took shape. Our neighbor and family friend, George Tash, joined in, crafting concrete archways, aviaries, and gathering spaces where people could celebrate together. For two years, they poured themselves into creating something meaningful—not just beautiful, but lasting.

On the morning of my wedding, Dad was still placing the final stones in the waterfall. Hours later, he walked me down the aisle, his hands marked with the work that had made the moment possible.

What began as a gift became something more—a place designed for life’s most meaningful celebrations. Today, every couple who marries here adds their own chapter, bringing new memories, new stories, and new meaning to the gardens that were created for exactly that purpose.

Every couple gets to customize a brick for our “Walk of Fame”, commemorating their special day for generations to come. Will you be a part of our story?
